Organizational records consisting of 16 typescript volumes of minutes, 1766-1858; and unbound notes copied from minutes, 1766-1770, by Yates Snowden. Other unbound items include printed certificate, 30 July 1828, informing Rev. John D. Schwartz of his election as a new member, illustrated with female figures including blind justice and a shepherdess beside a bee hive; treasurer's notes: bond, 1 Jan. 1874; oversize ledger sheets, 1878-1879, recorded by Jacob F. Schirmer, treasurer, in account with the Society, listing balance of "Relief fund" and stock accounts of the Society. Later materials include ribbon, May 1888, printed with dedication honoring Prof. J. Keppler; and program, 24 Jan. 1893, Freundschaftsbund Abendunterhaltung, with entertainments scheduled to include a concert by various members, followed by a dramatic theatrical presentation, and to conclude with a ball.

The German Friendly Society, a social and benevolent organization, was founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 1766 by Michael Kalteisen. After petitioning the South Carolina legislature, the society was incorporated in 1791. The society issued stock and made charitable contributions.
